Aggie women still can’t find first win

LAWTON, Oklahoma (December 29) – The Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team is still in search of their first victory of the season after falling to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals (4-7) by the score of 80-73 on Friday night. The loss puts the winless Aggies at 0-11 on the season, with Lone Star Conference play right around the corner.

“At this point I am really doubting that we have the capability to learn,” a clearly frustrated Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said after the game. “We did enough to win, played hard enough to win, but need to rebound better and be capable of learning.”

The Aggies were simply outplayed under the boards, 41 rebounds for UIW to CU’s 28, and gave up a number of crucial offensive rebounds late in the game. Cameron actually led for a good portion of the contest, but could not put the game away.

After falling behind by 12 points with under ten minutes to go, the Aggies cut the deficit to 2 but couldn’t do enough.

“We need to work on every aspect of rebounding, especially on the offensive side,” Coach Hackerott said. “We had a chance late in the game but need to learn to box out better.”

Guards Shantel Whitaker (senior) and Tiffany Williams (junior) had solid offensive performances, with room to improve on the defensive side. Whitaker led the Aggies in scoring with 18 points, to add to her 2 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Williams finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.

A total of four Aggies finished with double-digit scoring, as the team was able to drastically improve on their 19.4% shooting performance from their last game against Arkansas Tech University (4-4). Cameron shot 49.1% from the field against UIW.

Junior forward Sarah Moore had a nice outing, recording 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal in her 15 minutes of play. Her performance confirmed that her ankle has fully recovered following the severe ankle injury she suffered just weeks ago.

The Aggies are now off until January 4th when they travel to Denton, Texas, to take on the Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University (6-5, 2-0 LSC) at 7:00pm. They return home on January 11th for a women’s and men’s double-header (6:00pm/8:00pm) against Angelo State University.

“You have to stay encouraged, but we need to get a win,” Coach Hackerott said.

The Cameron Internet Radio Broadcast of the game experienced technical difficulties due to problems with the Cameron University Internet network. The broadcasts will return to normal scheduling for the next home contests.
