DENTON, Texas (January 4) – The Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (1-11) recorded their first win of the season tonight in a 61-54 upset of the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers (7-6). The victory is one of the many close games the Aggies have been a part of this season, and comes with just three games left before Lone Star Conference play begins.
“This win feels like we thought it would,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “It feels a lot better than losing, but it is what it is. It’s nice to get the monkey off of our backs but we still need to play better once conference rolls around.”
The Aggies kept the game close throughout, never falling behind by more than 6 points. After taking the lead on a three-point play by junior guard Tiffany Williams with 10:19 to go in the second half, the Aggies never looked back.
Things got rough late in the second half however, as Cameron almost gave up the game after seeing their ten point lead diminish to just four points.
“We called a timeout after they got within four, looked around at each other in the huddle, and said, ‘Enough is enough. It’s time to make plays and believe in each other.’ It was a matter of execution,” Coach Hackerott said.
Williams led the Aggies with a season-high 27 points. She also contributed 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
Freshman forward Megan Atkins continued her tenacious defense, finishing the game with a team-high in rebounds (8) and blocks (4). She also recorded 3 points and 1 steal. Her 8 rebounds were tied for the game-high with TWU’s Margaret Wimbish.
The CU women limited themselves to just 11 turnovers against TWU, nearly 8 less than their game average this season.
“The girls really played as a team tonight,” Coach Hackerott said. “It had nothing to do with coaching, they just got the job done.”
Junior guard Ciara “C.C.” Williams continued her spectacular play at point guard, contributing a game-high 7 assists and just one turnover. She also recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds, and a game-high 5 steals.
The Aggie women now make the long trek south to Kingsville, Texas, where they will take on the Texas A&M – Kingsville Javelinas (3-9) on Saturday afternoon. The women tip off at 2:00pm, with the Aggie men beginning at 4:00pm.
“We need to still work on the things we need to get better at and get ourselves mentally ready to go,” Coach Hackerott said. “Our attitudes will be good and hopefully we can keep this momentum rolling.”
