LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 25) – The nationally ranked (#40) Cameron Aggie women’s tennis team (5-1) hosted a trio of Lone Star Conference programs this weekend, taking on Central Oklahoma, (#35) Tarleton State, and Northeastern State. The Aggies swept their opponents going 5-2 against UCO and 5-3 against TSU, but their match against NSU was postponed due to weather.
“This was just awesome and I am very, very pleased,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “I was happy to get the win over UCO, but then to beat TSU in the same day was icing on the cake. They were ranked ahead of us and this win helps to move us into the Top 35 (nationally).”
The Aggies opened the homestand against UCO by sweeping all four singles matches and just one of the three doubles matches. The No. 4 and 5 matches were suspended.
Each of the Aggies’ four singles victories were straight set wins with the toughest match coming in the No. 3 match. CU freshman Carolina Mullor was given a run for her money but defeated UCO’s Domi Kovacikova 7-5, 6-4.
Senior Sandra-Leigh King easily disposed of her opponent without giving up a game. She defeated UCO’s Kyra Cody in the No. 6 match by the score 6-0, 6-0.
Juniors Kim Romero and Viviana Seca were the only Aggies to win their doubles match. The pair won their match as the No. 2 doubles team by the score 8-5.
In the second match of the day the Aggies upset the No. 35 nationally ranked TexAnns taking one of two doubles matches and four of five singles matches. Cameron’s Sandra-Leigh King was ahead by a set in the No. 6 match but play was suspended.
Romero and Seca once again were the lone Aggies to win both their singles and doubles match. The duo teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match 8-2. Romeo defeated TSU’s Chrissie Cooper (6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-1) in the No. 2 singles match while Seca dropped the TexAnn’s Diane Hawkins (6-1, 6-3) in the No. 5 singles match.
Mullor was unable to outlast her opponent in the No. 4 singles match losing in a three set thriller. The match was scored 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), and was CU’s only loss on the singles side.
“We have been working really hard and just practicing when we can,” Coach Helvey said. “Sometimes you don’t really need to know why your players are doing well you just get out of the way. I am very proud of them.”
Saturday’s matches were cancelled due to the intense wind conditions that made it impossible to play. Cameron was set to take on Northeastern but the match was postponed and may ultimately be cancelled. If no makeup date can be agreed upon, the match will be cancelled altogether.
This week the women will travel to Portales, New Mexico to take on both Eastern and Western New Mexico. The men (5-2) will stay in Lawton to host a trio of schools including Southwest Baptist University, St. Mary’s University, and East Central University.
The men are also scheduled to take on the University of Oklahoma in Norman tomorrow, but the match was bumped to Wednesday due to the fact that the Sooners are trapped in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
