Ags split with Texans, start new tradition

LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 25) – In what turned out to be a beautiful day for baseball, the Aggie baseball team (7-4) split their double-header with the Tarleton State Texans (7-7) at McCord Field this afternoon. The Ags won the first game 1-0, but dropped the second 7-4. Both games were very close contests that could have gone either way.

“Our defense played well and kept us in there,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “We had the opportunity to score all game and played well enough to win (both games) but couldn’t tie anything together.”

The first game was deadlocked at zero until the bottom of the seventh inning. Both starting pitchers lasted the entire game that took just an hour and a half. Junior pitcher Bevon Anderson pitched a two-hit shutout for the Aggies to record his second win of the season. Anderson faced just 22 hitters.

Cameron won the game on a double to centerfield by senior centerfielder Waylon Pettet. Pettet’s hit knocked in junior first baseman Josh Mathiesen who had reached on an error. Pettet finished the game 1-2 from the plate with the game’s only RBI. Mathiesen also finished 1-2 and was hit by a pitch.

Senior leftfielder Ryan Whiteley made it to third on a huge triple to left-centerfield. Whitely had one of the better days at the plate for CU, finishing 2-3.

The Aggies left 7 runners on base, a number that is much too high. CU just couldn’t seem to knock anyone home.

“We always started out the inning strong but couldn’t ever capitalize,” Coach Holland said. “We are just one hit away from winning a lot more games. We just can’t seem to get them and until that happens we will be in a lot of 1-0 games.”

Cameron fell victim to the same problems in the second game, stranding a ridiculous 13 runners on the base path. There were a number of times when the Aggies ended an inning with the bases loaded. Despite CU’s inability to knock in runners, the game stayed close until the sixth inning when TSU went up 7-2.

Senior pitcher Ryan Totte was saddled with the loss after giving up 5 runs on 6 hits to the 17 batters faced. He also walked 6 men and struck out 2.

The Aggies were out-hit 9 to 4, with the four hits coming courtesy of senior shortstop B.J. Cole, freshman third baseman Blake Watson, senior rightfielder Mark Armstrong, and Whiteley.

Cole and Whiteley both went 1-4 with a strikeout, with Cole hitting a double and knocking in 2 RBI. Whiteley also hit his second triple of the day. Watson went 1-3 with an RBI and Armstrong went 1-2 with a double and an RBI.

“One hit can get us back into it,” Coach Holland said. “Our biggest deficit has always been around 3 runs and all we need to win is usually one more hit.”

Today’s games also featured the beginning of what will become a new tradition with Cameron Aggie baseball. Due to the fact that the teams only play to seven innings, there is no opportunity to hold the Seventh Inning Stretch and lead the crowd in a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Similar to what is done at the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field, local Lawton personalities will be invited to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the fifth inning of every home game for CU’s Fifth Inning Stretch.

Today’s songs were sung by Cameron Director of Sports Information Craig Martin in the first game, and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Hackerott in the second.

The Aggies host the Texans at 1:00pm at McCord Field in the second double-header of the series.
