LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 26) – The Cameron Aggie baseball team (7-5) was swept away by both the wind and the Tarleton State Texans (9-7) this afternoon at McCord Field. The teams split their double-header yesterday afternoon, but the Texans left for the Lone Star State with a sweep of the final three games. Cameron lost the first game 4-2, and fell short in the second 5-2.
The Aggies’ major concern in the four-game series was on the offensive side of the ball. Yesterday the team stranded 23 runners on the basepath, and today left 16 runners on base. Cameron has the ability to knock in runs, they just need to start doing it.
The first game saw the Aggies jump out to an early 1-0 lead after junior pitcher J.W. Koweno struck out two of the first batters he faced. The game proved to be a pitcher’s duel until the fifth inning when the Texans posted 3 runs on the board, thanks to four consecutive hits to start the inning. Koweno pitched the complete game for the Aggies, giving up 4 runs on 12 hits after facing 30 batters. He also struck out 3 Texans.
Cameron was limited to just five hits in the game, and just one extra-base hit. Senior leftfielder Ryan Whiteley had arguably the best game at the plate for the Aggies finishing 1-3 with an RBI and a walk, with two strikeouts.
Senior shortstop Blake Hughes also went 1-3 at the plate with CU’s only double. He also scored a run for the Aggies.
In the second game the Aggies seemed determined to even the series at two games a piece. Cameron was held scoreless until the sixth inning and was limited to just six hits total. The blame should not rest solely on the Aggie offense however, as TSU pitcher Garrett Carruth was absolutely dominant on the mound.
Whiteley had another strong game at the plate, finishing a team-high 2-3 with a double and RBI. He and junior catcher Kyle Walbrick knocked in the only two CU runs. Walbrick finished 1-3 with an RBI and a strikeout.
The Aggies used a trio of pitchers in the game, rotating from senior Art Gonzales, to junior Cody Dillon, to senior Ryan Bengert. Gonzales started the game and pitched the first two innings allowing no runs on 1 hit. Dillon took over in the third giving up 5 runs on 9 hits after facing 18 batters. Bengert tried to bring the Aggies back into it and shut down the final 9 Texan batters he faced, giving up no runs on 2 hits.
Despite the Aggies’ three losses in the last two days, the season is still young and Lone Star Conference North Division play has yet to start. There is still plenty of time for the reigning LSC North Champions to repeat.
Cameron also continued their new tradition at the games, inviting local Lawton personalities to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the fifth inning of each game. James Stanley, the host of 1380am The Ticket’s Sports Zone (Lawton’s local morning sports radio talk show, 7:00am-10:00am weekday mornings) sang at the first game, and arguably the greatest Aggie fan of all time, “CU” Eddie Larsen sang during the second.
The Aggies travel to Kingsville, Texas this weekend to take on Texas A&M University - Kingsville. The game begins at 3:00pm on Friday, and 12:00pm on Saturday.
