Lawton, Oklahoma (March 9 & 10)- Eastern New Mexico came to visit the Aggie Baseball team this weekend at McCord Field. The Aggies savored the Greyhounds visit, taking all four games. On Friday (March 9) the Aggies won the first game 8-4 and the second game 12-11. The next day, the Aggies continued to roll with the first game win being 18-12 and the second game 7-6.
On Friday March 9th the Aggies blasted out of the dugout with five runs in the first inning. Cameron’s designated hitter Blake Watson started the Aggies off with a single to left field scoring two RBIs. First baseman Josh Mathieson also started of strong with a double to left field advancing 2 more Aggies across the plate. At the end of the first inning the Aggies had a commanding lead of 5-0.
The Aggies continued to take advantage with a run in the second, third, and fourth inning. At the end of the fourth, the Aggies lead was 8-0.
The Greyhounds tried to make a comeback in the seventh inning. The Greyhounds’ first baseman Troy Vaughan hit a grand slam to cut the Aggies lead in half. However, that was all that the Greyhounds could get out of the Aggies. The final score was 8-4 in favor of the Aggies.
In the second game on Friday, the offensive game for both teams were on fire. The Aggies had runs in every inning except the first. Eastern New Mexico had runs in all innings except the third and the seventh.
Eastern New Mexico started out tough with four hits in the first two innings. But the Aggies came out in the bottom of the second with more fight. Cameron’s Josh Mathieson and Ryan Whiteley both had doubles scoring runs. Cameron’s center fielder Waylon Pettet hit a triple to right field, earning two RBIs. This put Cameron up 5-4 in the bottom of the second inning.
The Aggies came back out in the third, getting four more runs. The Aggies second baseman Blake Hughes tripled to right field allowing three runs to score. After just three innings, the score was 9-4 Aggies.
The Greyhounds had two important innings to keep them in the ball game. The fifth and sixth innings both had three runs a piece for the Greyhounds, tying the game 11-11. The Aggies dug a little deeper by getting the final run in the bottom of the sixth inning and getting the win over Eastern New Mexico 12-11.
Saturday March 10 was another day for the offense. In the first game on Saturday, the Greyhounds had 13 hits, 11 RBIs, and 8 men left on base. Meanwhile, the Aggies had 17 hits, 14 RBI’s, and 7 men left on base.
The second inning was Cameron’s clinch in the game. In the second inning alone, the Aggies had 11 runs on 8 hits with 1 error and 2 left on base. The Aggies had seven singles and one double in the second inning to put the Aggies up 11-4 early in the game.
Another huge inning for the Aggies was the sixth inning. Aggies Mark Armstrong doubled to left field, along with three singles from Waylon Pettet, Blake Hughes, and Blake Watson that helped the Aggies earn six runs and winning the game 18-12.
The final game between the two teams ended in another victory for the Aggies. Once again they started off strong and continued throughout the game. The first inning the Aggies scored two runs to get the Aggies up 2-0.
The Greyhounds were not going to let this win come easily for the Aggies. After scoring runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, the Greyhounds were leading the Aggies 5-3. Cameron’s right fielder Brooks Pollard doubled to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the Aggies take the lead back from the Greyhounds and putting the Aggies up 7-5 going into the last inning. Eastern New Mexico received one more run in the seventh inning before the Aggies ended the game with an out by third baseman Bryan Nichols.
The Aggies next game is March 16 and 17 at Abilene, Texas to play Abilene Christian University. The Aggies will be back home on March 23 and 24 playing Angelo State University at our very own McCord Field, featuring our spectacular new scoreboard donated by the McMahon Foundation.
