LAWTON, Oklahoma (March 13) – The Cameron Aggie softball team (8-16, 4-4 LSC) had a huge day at Cameron Field today, sweeping the first-place Northeastern State University Lady Reds (14-5, 6-2 LSC). Everything was really clicking for the Aggies who won the first game 7-2, and the second 8-2. Cameron gave NSU their first, and second, conference losses of the season with the sweep.
“I’m very pleased with how we played,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “We really hit the ball well, had great pitching, and had big hits at the right time.”
Cameron has struggled at times this season, unable to put solid pitching, defense, and hitting together in the same contest. Today’s double-header proved that when the Ags get rolling, they can beat just about anybody.
“Today shows a lot about our potential,” Coach Nye said. “It shows where we can be when everything really starts clicking and coming together.”
Coach Nye attributed much of today’s sweep to the stellar pitching by senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs and freshman pitcher Ashton McBride.
Hibbs pitched the entire first game giving up just 2 runs on 4 hits after facing 30 batters. She also walked and struck out five Lady Reds. McBride followed Hibbs’ first game performance by allowing 2 runs on 6 hits after facing just 28 batters. McBride also struck out five Lady Reds and walked only two.
“(Amanda) Hibbs and Ashton (McBride) both pitched very well today,” Coach Nye said. “They really kept the pressure on them (NSU). It is definitely something to look at when you can hold the first-place team to just four runs in two games.”
The first game saw the Aggies jump out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. They continued to add to their tally going up 6-0 in just the fourth inning. Hibbs allowed two runs in the top of the sixth, but it simply wasn’t enough for NSU. The Ags added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and finished out the Lady Reds in the top of the seventh.
The game started out incredibly for the Ags, as senior shortstop Stephanie Bour immediately got on base after passing on four straight balls. Sophomore second baseman Megan Young followed right behind with a towering homerun over the leftfield fence to get the game rolling for the Ags.
Bour finished the game going 1-3 with an RBI, a strikeout and a walk. Young ended the game after going 2-4 from the plate with 2 RBI and a strikeout.
Junior leftfielder Whitney Richardson also had an impressive game at the plate going 2-3 from the plate with an RBI.
The second game saw a similar start as the Aggies took the lead early in the first inning, but ended up falling behind 2-1 in the third inning. Play was actually suspended for 20 minutes in the top of the third due to lighting.
After the break the Aggies seemed to come back even stronger. CU put up six runs in the final four innings to put the game out of reach for the Lady Reds.
Junior designated hitter Melissa Bour had arguably the best game at the plate for the Aggies, going 3-4 from the plate with a ridiculous 5 RBI. She recorded a double and a huge homerun that brought in two runners.
Bour, Young, Stephanie Bour, and junior centerfielder Sammi Adams were the only Aggies to record a hit in the game.
Young finished 1-2 at the plate with 2 RBI and two walks. Stephanie Bour had her second huge game in a row after going 2-3 with 2 RBI courtesy of a huge homerun over the leftfield fence. Adams went 1-3 and scored 2 runs.
The Aggies travel to Emporia, Kansas this weekend to take part in the Emporia State Invitational softball tournament. Stay tuned to goaggies.cameron.edu for the latest scores and updates from the tournament.
