LAWTON, Oklahoma (March 20) – The Cameron Aggie softball team (13-17, 6-4 LSC) continued its ridiculous tear this afternoon with a sweep of the second-place Midwestern State Mustangs (22-10, 6-4 LSC). Cameron has won seven of their last eight games. The Aggies won the first game by the score 3-2, and came from behind to take the second game 10-7.
“I am very pleased with our wins today,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Anytime you win it’s nice, but to sweep a conference opponent at home is huge. We could have probably hit the ball a bit better but what really matters is timely hitting, which we did well at.”
Senior shortstop Stephanie Bour had a monstrous day at the plate, hitting two of her three homeruns in the first game. She went 3-4 from the plate in the first half of the double-header with her two RBI and a double.
“You just can’t say enough about Stephanie (Bour) and how she hit the ball,” Coach Nye said.
Senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs pitched the complete game for the Aggies, giving up just a single run on four hits. She faced a total of 28 batters and struck out three.
“Amanda (Hibbs) pitched really well today,” Coach Nye said. “To give up just one run in a game against a team like Midwestern is great.”
Cameron’s other run came courtesy of a bases loaded bean of junior centerfielder Sammi Adams. Adams was awarded first base after getting hit by a pitch, bringing across junior rightfielder Whitney Richardson.
In the second half of today’s double-header, the Mustangs looked ready to avenge their earlier loss. Midwestern put up a quick two runs early in the first inning, but the Aggies bounced back to take the lead 3-2 after just the first frame. The Aggies held the lead for the remainder of the game, and in total held the lead for thirteen of the fourteen innings today.
“The girls all have so much potential and now it’s catching up,” Coach Nye said. “We are winning and once you are winning it is easier to have confidence and believe in what you do.”
As mentioned previously, Bour had three homeruns on the day with her last one coming in the second game. She finished the nightcap after going 2-2 with 3 RBI and a walk.
Freshman pitcher Ashton McBride had an incredible game both offensively and defensively, coming up huge for the Aggies. McBride recorded the win after giving up 7 runs on 11 hits. She faced 33 batters and gave up 2 walks. From the plate, McBride went a blistering 3-4 with 4 RBI. She nearly missed out on hitting for the cycle, recording a single, triple, and homerun.
“Ashton (McBride) hit and pitched extremely well today,” Coach Nye said. “Whenever someone has as good of a game as she did, we have a chance to win. We are keeping the good things going.”
Freshman catcher Callie Schlatter also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with an RBI and a strikeout. She finished with a single and a double.
The Aggies travel south to Wichita Falls, Texas on Thursday to wrap up their home-and-home series with Midwestern. The double-header begins at 1:00pm.
