CU Athletics officially drops the “Lady” Ags

LAWTON, Oklahoma (June 25) – The Cameron Athletic Department announced this afternoon the official dropping of the name “Lady” from their five women’s athletic programs. Until now, the Aggie women’s tennis, golf, basketball, softball, and volleyball teams had been known as the “Lady Aggies,” but not anymore.

“We are all the Aggies,” Cameron Athletic Director Jim Jackson said. “It was proper in years past to say ‘Lady’ Aggies, but now that women’s sports are established and are a big part of collegiate athletics, as well as worldwide entertainment, I think it is time to drop the word ‘Lady’.”

Changes will go into effect immediately as the Aggies prepare for the 2007-2008 athletic season. The Aggie website (goaggies.cameron.edu) has already undergone minor changes to remove any mention of the “Lady” Aggies.

“In this day and age we don’t make a distinction between ladies and gentlemen in athletics,” Jackson said. “We don’t say, ‘Playing tonight are the Gentleman Aggies,’ so why should we say Lady Aggies? In every program we have we are the Cameron Aggies, and I don’t think it is appropriate to designate ‘Lady’ any longer.”

Each of Cameron’s ten athletic programs are currently in the summer offseason portion of their schedule, and will return to campus this August. CU’s first home event comes on Tuesday, August 21st when the Aggie Volleyball team holds their preseason Black & Gold intra-squad scrimmage. The event takes place at 7:00pm.

Cameron’s first regular season competition takes place from August 24th-25th when the Aggie Volleyball team travels to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the St. Mary’s Invitational tournament.

Stay tuned to goaggies.cameron.edu for all of the information you’ll need in preparation for the 2007-2008 season.
