| LAWTON, Oklahoma (June 1) – The Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team stayed in town to sign their first recruit of the offseason. Head Coach James Helvey today announced the signing of Jeff Sasser, a standout tennis player from Lawton High School. Sasser will join the Aggie men’s tennis team this fall.
“The bottom line is that Jeff is a good player,” Coach Helvey said. “I think he has a lot of good tennis ahead of him. I’m very excited and interested to see him get to work out and train with seven other regionally and nationally ranked players (already on the team).”
Sasser competed as the No. 1 singles player on the LHS Wolverines and served as team captain throughout his senior season. He also won six tournaments in 2007 against some of the best players in the region.
Additionally, Sasser was awarded the Dr. Green Award each of his four years at LHS. The Dr. Green Award is given to the most valuable player on the tennis team. Sasser was also named to the LHS Honor Roll following his senior season.
“I think Jeff will rise to the occasion (of playing at Cameron),” Coach Helvey said. “He will become a better player and will reach new levels. I’m happy to add a local player that can help contribute to the team, and I know Jeff can do that.”
In both his junior and senior seasons at LHS, Sasser finished in sixth place at the year-end All-State Championship Tennis Tournament. He qualified for the event each of his four years as a Wolverine, but only placed his final two seasons. Sasser also qualified for the All-State team this year.
Since 2005, Sasser has been individually ranked in the top fifteen overall in the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) Missouri Valley section. Some of the best men’s tennis players in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa compete in the Missouri Valley section.
The Aggie men’s tennis team ended their 2006-2007 season ranked No. 22 in the nation. Coach Helvey hopes that the addition of Sasser, as well as a few other recruits that plan to sign in the coming weeks, can vault the Aggies into the top ten in 2007-2008.
