LAWTON, Oklahoma (June 29) - The Cameron women's basketball coaching staff is now complete and ready for the 2007-2008 season. Head Coach Kevin Hackerott announced today the hiring of new assistant Andrew Belsky, filling the open spot left by the departure of Nikki Maloney earlier this summer. Hackerott entertained a number of fine applicants and could not be more ecstatic about the addition of Belsky.
"I'm very excited to add Andrew to the staff. His recruiting ability and the fact that he has head coaching experience were important factors in choosing him for the position," Coach Hackerott said. "He has a very positive demeanor, is very energetic, and most of all he is excited about the direction of Cameron University and Aggie women's basketball. I know he wants to be a part the program."
The Aggies finished last season 4-22 but have already signed five highly-touted recruits this summer. CU looks to surprise many Lone Star Conference opponents next year and Belsky can't wait to get started.
"I'm real excited to get on board," Belsky said. "Coach Hack has the program going in the right direction and it is an exciting time to be part of Aggie women's basketball. I'm glad to get the opportunity to come to Cameron."
Belsky spent last season as the graduate assistant on the Pittsburg State women's basketball team. The Gorillas finished the 2006-2007 season with an overall record of 11-16 and an 8th place finish in the MIAA. During the season Belsky worked towards a Master of Science, completing the degree in just one year.
"The most important thing is that Andrew and I have similar feelings about what a good basketball team should be made of and how to put that together," Coach Hackerott said. "We've already formed a good comfort level with each other and his personality will be one that the team will enjoy greatly. We will benefit from his personal character as well as his knowledge of the game."
Prior to Pitt State Belsky was the head coach of the Hyannis High School basketball team. While at the helm of the Longhorns, he led the team to their first winning season in three years and a runner-up conference finish.
"I hope to draw from my coaching experience and help as much as possible in recruiting. My excitement and enthusiasm will help to keep the talent coming in," Belsky said. "I have been around a (similarly) up-tempo type of basketball and hope to bring a little bit from everything I have learned. I am tough-minded, physical, and coach with the attitude that you won't be outplayed."
Belsky received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska where he was also a student assistant on both the football and women's basketball teams. He played a major role in the setting up and running of daily practices and drills for both teams and also participated in film sessions and film exchange.
At Cameron coaches do not officially report until August 1st, but Belsky will begin planning for the 2007-2008 season with Coach Hackerott later this summer.
The Aggies are currently in the summer off-season portion of their schedule. Their first game of the season is an bition against Tulsa University in Tulsa on Tuesday, November 6th. Complete schedules for next season are available on the Aggie website at goaggies.cameron.edu.
