Saddlemaker to the Stars Set First Art Show
12:07 PM :: 2036 Views :: 7 Comments :: :: Around the Neighborhood

Howard Council is a saddlemaker by trade. 11 world champion calf ropers have won their titles on his saddles; country music superstar George Strait has four of Howard’s saddles; and Garth Brooks has his leatherwork on the seat of a four-wheeler.

Howard is also a storyteller, as anyone who wanders into his workshop near downtown Lawton knows. But, not that many people know he is also a painter. On Thursday Aug. 23, that’ll change, when the 81-year-old has his first one-man art show.

It's as much about history and Western culture, good memories and closing your eyes and imagining, as it is about art. Howard paints the things he knows and loves -- calf roping, a grazing horse, a grandchild, the Southwest Oklahoma landscape, old friends.

"I never took lessons, I'm just self-taught," he said.

Council has been collecting back from the collectors of his art to get ready
for his show and he's completed a few new works in oil, watercolor and of course a piece on leather.

Diana Brown, curator of Southwestern Medical Center Pride Gallery, approached Council two years ago about doing a show. From 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday "Howard Council: An Artist in Leather and an Artist in Oils - A Living Legend" will open with a public reception at the gallery, 5602 W. Lee Blvd. It’s free, refreshments will be served and chances are real good that you’ll hear Howard talking about rodeo star Roy Cooper and his great horse Topper that he’s painted; or about his first painting, done in 1961 -- a 30 in.-by-40 in. oil of a quarter horse that hangs on the wall behind the counter of the shop; or about the saddle order from Oscar winner Ben Johnson that he didn’t get completed before Johnson’s passing; or about the fact that the store that he and wife Genevieve run may be the second oldest continual family business in Lawton; or, well, there are many more possibilities.

"I can't wait to see who shows up," he said.

The exhibit will hang until Dec. 1.

I've known Howard for over 35 years ( I've roped for 53 years ) . He is an amazingly talented saddle-maker and artist. No one is better !!
I have visited his shop many times and heard some of his stories, and enjoyed them all.
I consider Howard a friend, someone I admire and respect.
I wish I had known about his art show, I would have been there. I will visit his exhibit the next time I'm in Lawton.

I wish you the best, Howard

As a young man I spent some time in the saddle shop dreaming of owning one of his great saddles and I did get to hear some of the stories.The last time I was in the shop he was busy getting the last of that years NFR trophy saddles finished. I have had the pleasure of riding a couple of his saddles. I worked and trained a few horse back then. One of my clients (Leonard Cherry),owned one that just set in the barn so, I cleaned it up and used it a few times. I tried to buy it or work it in trade but Mr Cherry was very attached to it.
I started riding with and helping a young local cowboy with the winter wheat cattle who had two of Howard Council's roping saddles and spent time in both. I was most impressed with how they fit the horse. You almost didn't need to chinch them up! I ended up trading for one in the early 90's but hit some hard times as most cowboys do from time to time sold it. Not the smartest thing I've done but I really had no choice. I love to have that roper back! I now have the back of an old man and my Doctor says I shouldn't lift anything heavier then a gallon of milk! So, those of you who have thrown a Council saddle on to a 16 hand horse know that it weighs just a bit more than that!
In closing I like to say thanks to Mr Council for allowing this misplaced Texas kid to hang around the shop from time to time.
