LAWTON, Oklahoma (October 25) – The Cameron Aggie volleyball team (12-13, 5-4 LSC) won their fourth match in a row tonight with a 3-0 sweep of the Eastern New Mexico Zias (4-23, 0-10 LSC) in Aggie Gym. The match lasted just one hour and twenty minutes and was scored 30-14, 31-29, 30-13. With the victory Cameron is well on their way to a playoff berth. The Aggies have just three matches left on the season and currently sit in 6th place in the Lone Star Conference. The top eight teams make the postseason tournament.

“We are peaking and this is the time to be doing that,” Head Coach John Haroun said. “We’re playing good volleyball and improving and that’s more important than our win.”

Cameron was in control of the match early on, putting the first game away very quickly. The Aggies let off the gas a bit in the second game and were down by a few points late in the frame. They were able to win the second game on their second match point. The third game wasn’t even close as Cameron put the match away for their fourth straight victory.

“There are no bad teams in the Lone Star Conference so anytime you can beat a conference opponent in three games it’s just great,” Coach Haroun said.

Senior outside hitter Fernanda Queiroz and freshman middle blocker Ruth Johnson led the Aggies as the only players with double-digit kill totals with 14 and 12, respectively. Queiroz attacked the net 29 times with 3 errors for a .379 attack percentage while Johnson totaled 33 attacks with 5 errors for a .212 attack percentage.

Queiroz also contributed 9 defensive digs, 3 service aces, and a single assist. Johnson totaled an additional 2 defensive digs, 2 block-assists, and a block-solo.

Junior middle blocker Whitney Long had a solid game offensively as well with a team-high .583 attack percentage. She totaled 8 kills on 12 attacks with just 1 error. Long also recorded a defensive dig and a block-solo in the match.

Leading the Aggies in assists with 35 was sophomore setter Laura Ellerbrock. Additionally she totaled a team-high 10 defensive digs to go along with 2 block-assists.

Cameron stays home this weekend to host the Buffaloes of West Texas A&M. WTAMU is currently ranked #15 in the nation and will come to Aggie Gym this Saturday at 2:00pm.

“We have already started getting ready for WT,” Coach Haroun said. “Obviously they will be tough and will challenge us but we are out to prove we can compete. We will work on speeding up our offensive and being more aggressive.”

Besides being this year’s final home match, Saturday’s match-up with WTAMU is this season’s annual Senior Night. The lone senior on CU’s squad this year is Fernanda Queiroz. There will also be a Halloween costume contest sponsored by the Aggie Cheerleading squad and the Pick Axe Band with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
