LAWTON, Oklahoma (November 24) – The Cameron University/Powerade Thanksgiving Classic women’s basketball tournament wrapped up play this evening in Cameron’s Aggie Gym. The Aggie women’s team lost both of their games in the event, dropping game one to nationally ranked (#3) Emporia State (4-1) on Friday, 80-60, and losing to Henderson State (2-3) tonight, 54-52. Fellow Lone Star Conference team Central Oklahoma also competed in the tournament.

 

“This was a good tournament with some really quality teams,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “I thought our kids played well against ESU but it was a disappointing ending and a disappointing loss. We just couldn’t find a way to win.”

 

On Friday the Aggies held the lead multiple times against the ESU Hornets but eventually could not keep pace. The game was extremely close until midway through the second half when ESU opened up a ten-point lead. CU lost to Emporia State, 81-63, just a week ago in the Emporia State Classic tournament.

 

In tonight’s match-up the Aggies lost to the Reddies via a Henderson State lay-up with one second left on the clock. Cameron held a four-point lead with under four minutes left in the game but let Henderson State back into it. HSU scored five of the final seven points.

 

“Obviously we were tired and sluggish tonight. But we’re not making excuses, HSU played well and we give them credit,” Coach Hackerott said. “We didn’t make the plays we needed to make and we gave up too many offensive rebounds. Their style of play was hard for us and we didn’t control the dribble well enough to win the game. We didn’t control the inside and we settled for too many quick shots.”

 

Junior forward Keindra Scott led the team in the tournament with 27 points on 8-20 (.400) shooting. She also totaled 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1 assist.

 

Sophomore forward Megan Atkins finished the two-day event with a team-high 14 rebounds. She also recorded 17 points on 8-12 (.667) shooting and 2 blocks.

 

The Central Oklahoma Bronchos won both of their games in the tournament. This weekend UCO defeated Henderson State, 83-54, and Emporia State, 71-66.

 

“We aren’t shooting very well,” Coach Hackerott said. “We have to do a better job and I have to do a better job. We will respond and see if we can get a win at TSU.”

 

The Cameron women’s team travels to Stephenville, Texas, next Thursday to take on the Tarleton State TexAnns. The match begins at 6:00pm.
