Savage Storm drops CU at home

LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 30) – A solid performance both offensively and defensively was simply not enough tonight in Aggie Gym as the Cameron women’s basketball team (3-16, 0-4 LSC North) fell to a very tough Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm squad (11-8, 2-2 LSC North). The final score had SOSU defeating CU, 82-71. Cameron was able to come within a single basket of Southeastern’s lead, but in the end did not have enough to win their first conference game of the season.

“Our kids played hard and we did play well at times, we just need to get a couple more kids to step up,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “We still need to get it going on all cylinders. They (SOSU) shot the ball well from three and that hurt us. We had our chances, we just didn’t take advantage.”

The Storm scored the first points of the game just 49 seconds into the first half and held the lead for the remainder of the night. The game was close for most of the first frame but SOSU went on a run before halftime and went into the locker room with a 34-26 lead. Cameron fought back and came within just 2 points, but then quickly found themselves down by 14. The game was very competitive throughout.

Both teams shot evenly from the field, with CU shooting a solid 41.0% and SOSU recording a 48.1% shooting percentage. The biggest difference between the two squads was that the Savage Storm shot 45.0% from behind the three-point arc while the Aggies shot just 7.7% from long-range. Cameron did turn the ball over fewer times than Southeastern, 10 to 7, and out-shot their opponents 61-54. The Storm was able however to out-rebound the Ags 35 to 32.

“Megan (Atkins) and Sarah (Moore) really stepped up and played well inside tonight,” Coach Hackerott said. “We need them to keep it going. The trainers told me Sarah might have had a concussion though, so I’m not sure where that will leave us. If they can stay healthy and keep playing well we will have a shot.”

Atkins, a sophomore forward, had an outstanding game for Cameron as she finished with a double-double against the Savage Storm. She recorded 13 points on 4-6 shooting and a team-high, and game-high, 12 rebounds. Atkins also contributed an assist to go along with her team-high, and game-high, 3 blocks. She was on the floor for 26 minutes tonight.

Senior forward Sarah Moore had a solid game as she finished with 15 points on 5-7 shooting. She only played 19 minutes in the contest and was also able to record 4 rebounds, a block, an assist, and a steal.

“Tiff (Tiffany Williams) and Jazz (Jasmine Parr) kept on scoring for us,” Coach Hackerott said. “If they can keep it up then we might have some chances in a few games.”

Senior guard Tiffany Williams was the only other player to finish the game with double-digit scoring numbers as she recorded a team-high 18 points on 7-16 shooting. She also contributed 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal in 35 minutes on the court.

Parr, a junior guard, finished the game with 8 points on 3-16 shooting. She also chipped in 4 rebounds, an assist, and a block in 36 minutes of play.

Merrisa Martinuzzi, another of Cameron’s senior guards, recorded a team-high 6 assists against SOSU. She also finished tonight’s game with 7 points on 3-7 shooting, 4 rebounds, and a steal. Martinuzzi played in 36 minutes tonight.

“It’s just a matter of firing on all cylinders,” Coach Hackerott said. “If we can do that then we will have a chance to win.”

The Aggies travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma, this weekend to take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs. The teams tip off at 2:00pm on Saturday. Cameron returns home for their final weeknight game of the season to host the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions next Wednesday (February 6) at 6:00pm.

There are only four more home games left on Cameron’s 2007-2008 schedule. Don’t miss your chance to see the Aggies in action!
