Aggie tennis blanks OBU, 18-0

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma (February 27) – The nationally-ranked Aggie men’s (3-1) and women’s (3-1) tennis teams hit the road for another early season non-conference dual on Wednesday and came home with another resounding victory. The squad traveled over to Shawnee, Oklahoma, to take on a tough Oklahoma Baptist University Bison squad and left with an undefeated sweep. The Aggie men’s team defeated the Bison 9-0, and the CU women followed suit with a 9-0 sweep of the Lady Bison.

“I’m real pleased,” Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach James Helvey said. “It was a very good effort by the entire team. Oklahoma Baptist is a good team so it was a nice win for us.”

Senior Kim Romero got this going early for the women’s team, as she refused to give up a single game in her No. 2 singles match against OBU’s Brittney Byrd. Romero won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, and also went onto win her No. 2 double match with junior Viviana Seca, 8-3. Seca also won her No. 3 singles match for the Aggies, 6-3 and 6-0.

The closest match of the day was the No. 1 singles battle between Cameron’s junior Irene George and the Lady Bison’s Samantha Attard. The first set was forced to a tie-breaker but Attard simply did not have enough to pull the upset. George won the match for Cameron, 7-6 and 6-4.

George also won her No. 1 doubles match with partner Carolina Mullor, a sophomore, defeating Attard and Byrd by the score 8-5. Mullor did not play singles.

On the men’s side there were really no close matches. The Cameron men easily dispatched a very good Bison squad only giving up a few games on the day.

“Our guys went out and took care of business,” Coach Helvey said. “They scare me a bit, but in a good way. When they want to beat you, they will find a way to win. They are very talented.”

Cameron senior Jordi Mullor defeated Bruno Scacalossi, 6-2 and 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match, and nearly shutout Scacalossi and his partner Gustavo Schaefer, 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles match. Mullor’s doubles partner was junior Daniel Pazos who won his No. 2 singles match, 6-1 and 6-2.

CU’s No. 3 doubles duo of junior Saman Samii and freshman Jeff Sasser were the lone Aggie men to blank their opponents as they won and recorded the 8-0 shutout. Samii also won his singles match, taking it 6-4 and 6-2. Sasser played a singles match, but it was not counted towards the overall score. He defeated his opponent 6-0 and 6-1.

Senior Nicolas Mascheroni also had a great singles match and narrowly missed out on another Cameron shutout. He disposed of his opponent in the No. 3 singles match, 6-0 and 6-1. He also won his No. 3 doubles match with partner Cristian Easton, a junior. The pair won their match 8-5.

“This was a good preview for this weekend,” Coach Helvey said. “Now we just have to get ready for the next one.”

This weekend the Aggie men’s tennis team hosts a two-day event featuring St. Mary’s University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and Southwest Baptist University. Cameron battles St. Mary’s at 9:30am on Friday morning, Southwest Baptist at 9:30am on Saturday, and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2:30pm on Saturday. All four teams will rotate matches against each other throughout the event.

All matches will be played at the Cameron University Tennis Complex where parking and admission is always free.
