CU tennis has their way with DBU

LAWTON, Oklahoma (March 26) – Today at the CU Tennis Center the Cameron men’s and women’s tennis teams scored some impressive wins over the Dallas Baptist Patriots. Both the Aggie men (#11) and women (#30) are nationally ranked and were simply too much for DBU to handle. The men pulled off the sweep and won 9-0, while the women won 7-2 and narrowly missed out on the shutout. Both of the two Cameron losses today were extremely close to being Aggie victories.

“We played well today and I am proud of the team,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “It was another day, and another good (NCAA) Division-II win.”

With Cameron’s two victories this afternoon, Head Coach James Helvey moved his Cameron coaching record to 402-201 all-time. His career record (Texas Wesleyan and Cameron) currently sits at 496-262, meaning Coach Helvey is a mere four victories away from 500 career victories, a very impressive feat and a coaching milestone.

Overall on the day the Aggie men’s and women’s tennis teams won five of the six doubles matches and eleven of twelve singles matches. Cameron’s men’s team moved to 12-3 on the season with the victory, and the women improved to 6-6 with their win.

In this afternoon’s early doubles matches the Aggie men went 3-0 while the women went 2-1. Both squads recorded a pair of 8-4 wins. The men gave up a mere ten games in the three doubles matches, while the women’s only doubles loss was a 9-7 defeat in the No. 1 doubles spot.

Junior Irene George and sophomore Carolina Mullor lost the aforementioned No. 1 women’s doubles match 9-7, after being up 7-3. DBU’s No. 1 women’s doubles team of Jeanelle Stines and Lisa Olian won six straight games to take the match.

CU’s other loss came in the No. 1 women’s singles spot where Irene George fell in three sets. The match was scored 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, and was a great match. George’s opponent in the match was Jeanelle Stines.

Senior Nicolas Mascheroni and junior Cristian Easton had the biggest doubles win for Cameron, taking the No. 2 men’s doubles match in resounding fashion, 8-2. They played the Patriot duo of Richard Vo and Clint Baird.

Also on the men’s side senior Jordi Mullor nearly shutout his opponent, Richard Vo, and won 6-0, 6-1. Mullor and teammate Daniel Pazos, a junior, won the No. 1 doubles match 8-4 versus Brett Sticker and Bronson Vaughn. Pazos won the No. 2 singles match for CU 6-1, 6-2.

Junior Saman Samii had a very solid match, defeating DBU’s Bronson Vaughn in the No. 3 singles match. The final score was 6-2, 6-1.

“Our men’s team played well and didn’t make very many mistakes,” Coach Helvey said. “They played at a real high level last week in Florida, then again yesterday against Oklahoma, and it all poured over into today. They are playing good, solid tennis.”

In another of the women’s singles matches, senior Kim Romero recorded Cameron’s only shutout in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Romero swept DBU’s Lisa Olian in the No. 2 singles match.

Just about every Aggie tennis player barely missed out on a shutout of their own in an all-around great afternoon of tennis.

“Today our women’s team was the better team,” Coach Helvey said. “We showed up and played hard. DBU has a few good players so we had to focus and concentrate. We took care of business though.”

The Cameron tennis team hosts a high school tournament for area high school tennis teams all day this Friday (March 28) at the CU Tennis Center. Tennis teams from all over the region will descend upon Cameron for a fundraising tournament hosted annually by the Aggies and Coach Helvey.

Cameron’s next action on the court is next Monday, March 31, when both the men’s and women’s teams travel the short distance to Wichita Falls, Texas, to battle the Midwestern State Mustangs. The teams then travel to Ada, Oklahoma, the next day (April 1) to take on the East Central Tigers.

“It’s always good to win, especially at home,” Coach Helvey said. “Now we are looking forward to next week’s matches.”

The next time you can catch the Aggies at home at the CU Tennis Center is the next weekend (April 4-5) when Cameron hosts St. Mary’s University, Armstrong Atlantic University, and Northeastern State University in a four-team quad match. Play begins Friday and concludes on Saturday.
