Aggies crown three All-Americans
LAWTON, Oklahoma (June 27) – This year was an outstanding year all around for the Cameron Aggies, who saw a number of student-athletes be named to All-Conference and All-Region teams. With the 2007-2008 athletic season now completely over, the All-America teams for numerous spring sports have been announced and now CU can add three All-American athletes to the long list of accolades this season.
Aggie men’s golfer Peter Svajlen, and men’s tennis players Jordi Mullor and Daniel Pazos all were named to their respective All-America teams in releases sent out only recently. Other than winning an individual national title, being named to an All-America team is as good as it gets for a student-athlete. Each of these three Aggies competed for CU in the national tournament of their respective sport.
“I think it’s very exciting that we have three All-Americans this year,” CU Athletic Director Jim Jackson said. “All three of these young men are really what Aggie Athletics are about: being good on the athletic field, good in the classroom, and good in the community. They are a really good representation for our athletic program and of Cameron University.”
Svajlen, a junior, had an incredible season and was named to the GCAA/Ping All-American Third Team. He was also named this year’s Cameron University Male Athlete of the Year at the spring awards banquet. Svajlen led the Aggie men’s golf team to the eighth Lone Star Conference Championship in Cameron University history, and was crowned both a conference (team) and regional (individual) champion this year.
Additionally he won two tournaments this year, as he took home the individual title at both the Red River Intercollegiate (March 10-11, Winstar G.C.) and the NCAA South Central Super Regional Championship (May 5-7, Grey Rock G.C.). Svajlen also finished as the runner-up (second place) at the LSC Championship, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
After winning the Regional Championship he advanced to the NCAA National Championship tournament where he finished 64th. This year Svajlen was also named to the LSC All-Academic Team, from which he was named the LSC Academic Player of the Year. Other postseason accolades for Svajlen included being named to the LSC All-Conference First Team, as the Team Effort Division II South Central Regional Medalist, to the GCAA/Ping South Central All-Region Team, and to the CoSIDA Academic All-District (6) At-Large Team.
“Peter has won so many awards this year not only on the golf course but in the classroom, and I think he is very deserving of being named an All-American,” Jackson said “We look forward to seeing him improve even more in his senior season next year.”
Mullor and Pazos were both named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American team as a doubles team. The duo finished the season ranked as the #1 doubles team in all of Division II men’s tennis. They were also instrumental in helping the nationally ranked #7 Aggie men’s tennis team and head coach James Helvey win the first Lone Star Conference Championships (regular season and postseason tournament) in school history.
Mullor, a senior, finished the season ranked #36 nationally in singles with an individual record of 14-9 in singles and 22-4 in doubles. He competed primarily at CU’s top singles and doubles positions. Mullor was also named to the LSC All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams, and was once named the LSC men’s tennis player of the week. In the fall season he won the LSC’s #2 singles championship, and the #3 doubles championship.
Pazos, a junior, ended the year ranked #38 nationally in singles and recorded an individual record of 21-3 in singles and 23-4 in doubles. On Coach Helvey’s roster Pazos usually played at the number two singles position, and with Mullor at the top doubles spot. Pazos also won the ITA Central Region Player to Watch Award at season’s end and was named to the LSC All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams. In the fall individual season, he won the LSC’s #1 singles runner-up championship, and the #1 doubles consolation championship. Additionally, he was named the LSC Newcomer of the Year.
“Jordi and Daniel were huge in helping Cameron to win the first conference title and first regional title in our history,” Jackson said. “They teamed phenomenally well on the court as doubles partners.”
Currently, all of the Aggie student-athletes are in the offseason training portion of their schedule. The 2008-2009 athletic season begins in late August with the start of the Cameron volleyball and cross country seasons.
