CU makes quick work of OPSU
LAWTON, Oklahoma (October 28) – For the second time this season the Cameron Aggies (13-10, 4-5 LSC) made quick work of the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies (5-21, 1-9 Heartland) with a 3-0 sweep. Tonight’s match was scored 25-14, 25-15, 25-22, and lasted a little over an hour. CU was in control of the match throughout and now has just four matches left on the season.
“You are never unhappy with a win, but you can be unhappy with the way you played to get the win,” Head Coach Brianne Smedley said. “We didn’t play with the intensity and enthusiasm we are capable of. That is something we are going to have to improve before Thursday’s match.”
The Aggies recorded a solid .205 attack percentage in the match, including a .375 percentage in the second set. CU outplayed their opponents in every category and has now won four matches in two years against OPSU.
“There wasn’t one aspect of our game that was outstanding tonight,” Coach Smedley said. “I thought everything we did was good, but not great. The main thing we have to do now is to only look one match ahead. We need to take it one match a time.”
Junior right-side hitter Lindsay Paziuk led the match with 10 kills (3 errors) on 22 attacks for an attack percentage of .318. She was the only player in the match to record a double-digit kill total. Paziuk also contributed 7 defensive digs, a service ace, and a block-assist.
Freshman outside hitter Malyssa Acton had a solid match as she posted 9 kills (4 errors) on a team-high 25 attacks for a .200 attack percentage. She also recorded an assist and a dig.
Senior libero Veronica Reeks finished the match with a match-high 12 defensive digs. She also recorded 3 assists and a service ace.
Leading the match in assists once again was junior setter Laura Ellerbrock who contributed 26 assists. She also had a great game defensively as recorded 10 defensive digs, the second-highest total in the entire match. Additionally Ellerbrock had a kill on 2 assists for a .500 attack percentage and a match-high 2 service aces.
CU has hosts their final two home matches this week, first against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Thursday (October 30, 7:00pm) and then against the Angelo State Rambelles on Saturday (November 1, 2:00pm). The Aggies have just four five matches and two weeks left in the season.
“We are looking forward to the final two weeks of the season,” Coach Smedley said. “We hope everyone comes out and supports our seniors in their final two home matches.”
Reeks, libero Haley Hatch, and middle blocker Whitney Long are the three seniors on this year’s squad who will be playing their final home match in Aggie Gym this Saturday. Prior to the match versus ASU, a “Senior Day” ceremony will take place on the court honoring the seniors.
