#6 CU achieves highest rank ever

SKILLMAN, New Jersey (November 6) – The good news just keeps coming for the Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team. After winning 7 of the 9 championships at last month’s Lone Star Conference Championship tournament, the Aggies this week achieved the highest ranking in school history. In the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings of the 2009 spring season the Aggie men were ranked #6 in the country.

“It feels great to be ranked that high nationally,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “It will be tough to duplicate the success we had last year, but I’m confident we have a team that could do it. We are very strong from top to bottom.”

The Aggies were ranked as high as #7 last season, but were upset in the NCAA National Championship by Francis Marion. This year Francis Marion will begin the season ranked #5 nationally.

In the NCAA South Central Regional rankings the Aggies can’t get any higher. The #1 ranked Aggies were upset (due to injury) at last month’s ITA Regional Championship, but are still clearly the best team in the entire region.

“We are definitely the top team in the region,” Coach Helvey said. “We added a few exceptional players in the offseason and should be poised for another great year. It won’t be easy though; most of the teams we play this year are ranked in the top thirty nationally.”

CU will be led this year by Daniel Pazos at the top singles spot. In this week’s rankings it was revealed that Pazos will start 2009 ranked #18 nationally in the singles rankings, and ranked #11 in the doubles rankings. His doubles partner this year is newcomer Diego Trojano.

Regionally the duo is ranked at the #2 spot. In singles Pazos is also ranked #2, while Trojano is ranked #13 regionally.

Cameron’s other player ranked nationally in the latest ITA singles rankings is Cameron’s Saman Samii who comes in at the #39 rank. Regionally, Samii starts the season at #5. Cristian Easton is CU’s only other player to be ranked regionally in singles as he will start the season ranked #7.

CU’s final representation in the ITA regional rankings is the doubles tandem of Samii and Daniel Bonamigo. They are the 10th ranked doubles team in the region.

The Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team begins their season next February.

“We can’t wait for the spring season to get here,” Coach Helvey said. “We have got the talent to have a very good year, and we are ready to get back to the national tournament.”
