Aggies end season above .500

DENTON, Texas (November 8) – With no playoffs in sight, the Cameron Aggie volleyball team (14-13, 5-8 LSC) ended their season today with a 3-0 loss to the Texas Woman’s Pioneers (19-12, 8-5 LSC) in Denton, Texas. CU and TWU battled back and forth in a very competitive match, but the Pioneers won 25-20, 25-21, 25-15. The Aggies now enter the off-season portion of their schedule.

“It’s disappointing to end the season with a loss because we didn’t really play up to our expectations,” Head Coach Brianne Smedley said. “We had a good season with a winning record, and we had some great matches. We don’t want to remember the season for of this one loss, but for all of our improvement.”

Cameron recorded a team attack percentage of .096, while Texas Woman’s finished with a .240 attack percentage. The Pioneers out-blocked the Aggies 9-2, and also recorded more kills, assists, and digs than their opponents.

“Offensively we couldn’t put a ball down,” Coach Smedley said. “TWU went up aggressive with every swing and whether we were swinging or working our shots, we just couldn’t put a ball down. I’m disappointed with the match but pleased with the season.”

Offensively the Aggies were once again led by junior right-side hitter Lindsay Paziuk who was one of only two players in the entire match to finish with a double-digit kill total. Paziuk recorded 13 kills (4 errors) on 34 attacks for a .265 attack percentage. She also chipped in 8 defensive digs, a block-assist, and an assist.

Senior libero Haley Hatch recorded the second-highest defensive dig total in the match with 16. She also recorded a match-high 2 service aces.

Leading CU with an impressive .417 attack percentage was senior middle blocker Whitney Long. She recorded 7 kills (2 errors) on 12 attacks, as well as 2 defensive digs and a block assist.

With 26 assists, junior Laura Ellerbrock recorded a team high. She also finished the match with 2 kills (no errors) on 7 attacks for a .286 attack percentage, 9 defensive digs, and a service ace.

“This season was definitely one of my favorites,” Coach Smedley said. “I had so much fun with this team and they worked really hard. I was pleased with some things we accomplished this year. I knew this season was going to be extra challenging, but overall I am pleased.”

Cameron’s next volleyball action is scheduled for the spring when the team travels to a number of exhibition tournaments. The Lone Star Conference Championship volleyball tournament takes place in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas A&M on November 13-15.

“Now the girls have to work out on their own,” Coach Smedley said. “We have a lot of individual work to do and I have noticed things that certain girls need to work on. Every girl has a couple of things that will be their focus during the off-season.”
