Aggies run to 15th at Regionals
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 8) – The 2008 cross country season came to an end today for the Cameron Aggies as they finished in 15th place at the NCAA Regional Championship. The meet featured 22 elite running teams from the South Central Region, and was hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Cameron’s finish this year is two spots better than their 2007 performance.
“I thought we did pretty well today considering all of the obstacles we have had to overcome this season,” Head Coach Matt Aguero said. “I am pleased with how today went. Everybody ran well and we finished about where I thought we would. It’s always good to finish in top 15.”
CU’s point total for the event was 392. Abilene Christian University won the meet with an overall team score of 31. The individual regional champion was Julius Nyango of the ACU Wildcats with a time of 30:10.7. Today’s meet was 10 kilometers in distance.
“This was a tough course today,” Coach Aguero said. “It wasn’t a very fast course so all of the times were pretty slow. No one ran a really great time, but all of our times were solid.”
Cameron’s top finisher for the fourth consecutive meet was sophomore Mohamed Khelalfa. Khelalfa finished in 22nd place overall with a time of 32:39.0. His time per mile was a blistering 5:15. A total of 150 runners competed in the meet.
“This is probably the best race Mohamed has run all season. He beat a lot of Lone Star Conference runners he didn’t beat at last week’s LSC Championship,” Coach Aguero said. “Our region is really tough and is probably the second-toughest in the entire nation, which makes Mohamed’s finish even more impressive.”
CU’s other two runners to finish in the top 100 were senior Mudasar Haidat and freshman Edwin Chelashaw. Chelashaw took home 48th place with a time of 33:22.8, while Haidat finished in 81st place with a time of 34:24.7. Chelashaw averaged a 5:22 mile time; Haidat averaged a 5:32.
Rounding out Cameron’s top five finishes were freshman Juan Ruiz and senior Jamin Jones. Ruiz finished the race in 113th place with a time of 35:46.7. His average mile time was 5:45.
Jones, who is still recovering from the lingering effects of mononucleosis, ran a strong race and finished in 128th place. His time in the meet was 37:22.5 with an average mile time of 6:01.
Junior Guy Narcomey also competed in the event for CU, although his finish did not count towards Cameron’s team score. Narcomey took home 129th place with a time of 37:32.7. His mile split in the race was 6:02 per mile.
As mentioned previously, today’s Regional Championship meet was CU’s final action of the 2008 cross country season. The squad will take part in a number of track events this spring, but since CU only has a cross country team their spring finishes will not count towards rankings or championships.
“As a whole our season went pretty well,” Coach Aguero said. “If at the beginning of the year someone had told me this was how we’d finish I would have been disappointed, but I am pleased with the effort our guys gave considering all of the obstacles we went through. We grew individually and as a team which is what’s most important.”
