Homeowners Want to Know How to Build Value -- Cheaply

One of the most often asked questions of appraisers, this one any way, is "What can I do, that doesn't cost very much, to increase the value of my home?"
First, keep in mind that when talking about what is for most of us, our most expensive possession, just about anything we do is going to cost more than what we'd like for it to.
Second, do not expect a dollar for dollar return. A new $14,000 roof is no guarantee of a $14,000 increase on the

Tips for Homeowners Living in Tornado Alley

It's that time of year again when we all wish we had prairie dog holes to go into sometimes. This is the stormiest time of year, though it seems anymore that any given day of any season there's liable to be a dark cloud with a tail dropping down in Southwestern Oklahoma. I'm not pushing any theories on global warming, all I know is that the weather was not always this way around the neighborhood.

Putting Out the Welcome Mat for the Military

This column is aimed more at the real estate professionals in Southwest Oklahoma. Current data shows that there are some 1.4 million active duty military members, and that about 500,000 relocate each year.
In researching Web sites that may be helpful to house hunters in the military coming to Fort Sill, there are no listings for our area (as of June 2008) on one of the best sites that I came across,....

Drop the Line

When I say, "Drop me a line," I'm not just talking about fishing. The good folks here at Lawtoninfo.com have as part of this Web site, a Community Forum. (You just click on to the top of this page to find it.) Some of you already know about it. But, it gives you, the reader, a chance to ask about a particular subject. Then, I make a feeble attempt to answer it. Sometimes I actually may know the answer, but if I don't I know a lot of people smarter than me, so we'll give it our best shot.

Spring is in the air – and in our closets and garages. Not sure whether it's an ancient pagan rite or if it has something to do with the moon and tides, but something makes us want clean the place up when the temperature rises and leaves turn green on the trees. Then again maybe we're just coming off of five months or so of cabin fever and we're rarin' to git er done.

In case you haven't dealt with the home-selling business for awhile, you might want to be aware that real estate agents are coming "into season." This does not mean you can legally go hunting for them with a bow, black powder or a 30-30. Nor does it mean you should go into the woods with a pair of binoculars listening for rutting sounds of licensed brokers. But, you might encounter more real estate professionals at watering holes, toasting sales.
Spring is when, for any number of reasons, people begin moving. So they start selling homes and buying homes.
As someone who visits plenty of properties coming on the market, I see a lot of differences in the way homeowners get ready. Here are a few tips offered by Showhomes ....

Our Oklahoma weather seems to have trouble making up its mind. One day it's so cold that the dog doesn't want to go outside, the next it's so nice, you can’t get the dog to come back in. Suppose that could be a dog issue as well. But, longtime Southwest Oklahomans know that we're not out of the woods yet. There's plenty of time for several more good blasts of Old Man Winter. With these cold spells, you do have to take some precautions.

Here's something worth pointing out that'll make you feel good as we enter a whole new year. A Lawton realtor was one of three from across the state to receive the 2007 Open Door Award. The award seeks the "brightest and best realtors who give unselfishly to improving the world around them through community service." Tony Capuccio was honored Oct. 15 at the ...

Good News on the Home Front in Lawton

Well, I hope you heard the good news about housing in Lawton.
A government report earlier this month stated that while the housing industry has a crisis going on nationally, Oklahoma and notably Lawton, are an oasis for the industry.
That says good things about local homeowners and buyers, those doing the financing, realtors, and, dare I say it, maybe even an appraiser got it right.
It also says, new folks are moving...

Here are a few winterizing tips: First, live in Florida.
My family lived in Palm Beach when I was a kid. Heaviest winter coat I ever had was a lightweight poplin jacket – and I didn’t wear that every day. Never heard my parents complain about heating bills.
But, if like more and more of us, you’re finding Southwest Oklahoma is a great place to call home, you’ll find that your house does need a little more preparation for the winter months.
